Keith Grimes on BMJ Future Health: AI governance, clinical safety, and what clinicians need to know in 2026

Earlier this year, Dr Keith Grimes joined Dr Helen Surana, Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Innovations and Chair of the BMJ Future Health Advisory Panel, for a webinar on the state of AI in healthcare right now.

The webinar covered the AI-focused questions clinicians, healthcare leaders, and digital health teams need to consider this year: how governance and clinical safety standards apply to AI tools, what AI agents and ambient scribes actually mean for clinical workflows, and how to think about responsible AI adoption in primary care and hospital settings.

Keith brings his perspective as both a former NHS GP and as someone working daily on clinical safety and governance for healthtech companies, which means the discussion moves between the regulatory (DCB0129, DCB0160, NHS digital risk management) and the practical (why prompt engineering is less important than context, what adoption barriers look like in primary care, how AI is changing software development in health).

The hour-long webinar was recorded and is well worth a watch for anyone trying to understand what the governance landscape actually requires rather than what the headlines say it does.
